We're making audio stories

Just for fun.

As a joy practice.

To learn something new.

To hone our skills.

For self-expression.

And maybe for our mental health.

Here's the idea:

We meet for 6-8 weeks and make stories like the one below. Each week we have a new assignment. We post our work in the community.

After the live cohort is over, you'll have access to the community. Each month, expert-led workshops will allow you to continue to learn and practice at your own pace.

Workshops will include things like...

  • sound design
  • how to use music in your pieces
  • interviewing techniques
  • recording sounds & ambiance in the field
  • something new each month

We'll make audio stories similar to this 👇

Micro Story, Bek Johnson
It is Well

"I signed up for Bek’s program because I know they have a high level of expertise and are aligned with my values. Bek consistently offered helpful guidance and support and the course was fun, accessible, and neurodivergent-affirming."

Jennifer Andrew, Disability Rights North Carolina (from my previous community, Audio Makers)

If enough folx sign up, we can do this!

Also spots will be limited so that we can grow slowly and carefully.

Our brains are wired for storytelling

Storytelling may have been a key factor in human evolution, helping our ancestors survive and thrive.

If storytelling is one of the reasons we’ve survived, let’s not stop now. Let’s call on our ancestors, our guides, and gayngels and make new stories.

Microphones give us superpowers. They’re like magic wands. When we hold one up to someone we show them “I see you and I care about you.”

Let’s just make rad shit. Let’s wild this place up with found sound, interviews with strangers, ourselves, and people we adore.

Let’s forget about - just while we're here - podcasts. Let's skip subscriber numbers, ID3 tags, RSS feeds, and how to find advertisers.

Let’s record everything around us and turn it into purpose. Let’s listen to ourselves, and other marginalized voices. Let’s break what we’re used to hearing and make something new.

Let’s honor our ancestors by making more stories. Let’s make beauty. Let’s capture what’s already beautiful. Let us hear what you hear. Tell us what you haven’t yet been able to say.

Don't know how to audio?

Totally ok. You'll learn as we go along. If you already know how to edit, you can practice your skills and try new things.

Three courses are included ($400 value)

Courses include...

  • Pro Audio Blueprint (all about gear and how to set it up)
  • Audio Editing Foundation
  • Audio Editing: Next Steps

If you already use a DAW, that's great. The projects and assignments are DAW-agnostic.

The included audio editing courses are all in Hindenburg. (If you didn't get your 60-day extended trial - sign up for the waitlist and grab it there along with a free training.)

Some very nice people have said some very nice things about me...

Who's leading this?

Loud & Queer is led by me, Bek Johnson. I'm an audio engineer, podcast editor, & producer, course creator and neurodivergent queerdo.

For over a decade I've worked on several podcasts from the Peabody award-winning show On Being with Krista Tippet, to fledging podcasters and educational institutions. I'm a senior trainer at Hindenburg and have led countless audio workshops and webinars.

I dropped out of audio school because of some bad experiences with sexism, anti-queerness, and a (then) undiagnosed learning disability. I'm grateful for that experience because it made me into the teacher I am now.

Read my story here.

So come on, dear queers, over to our snow fort where we learn, experiment, make mistakes, share, and nerd out. Let's create a place where we listen to people and help them feel seen and heard. A place where we feel seen and heard. Let’s make audio for the fun of it, for the hobby of it. For the life-giving purpose of it.

Let's turn audio into stories and stories into gifts we give the world

The community will be held on the Circle platform.

How much is it?

Pricing isn't set yet.

We'll base prices using The Green Bottle method below.
